Almost every disappointment we see with cabinetry comes from someone buying one of these while picturing the other, so it is worth separating them before anything else on this page.
The first is semi-custom, sized to your room. The boxes and doors come from a manufacturer that holds stock, the sizes are cut to your measurements rather than to a standard grid, and the whole thing is measured, ordered and installed in a matter of days rather than weeks. You choose from a defined set of door styles and finishes. Within that set the result is genuinely custom to the room, and it costs a fraction of the alternative.
The second is fully custom cabinetry, built from scratch for your house. Any dimension, any configuration, any species, any profile. Nothing is chosen from a set. It is manufactured after it is ordered, and that manufacturing time is real.
The honest guidance is that most kitchens are well served by the first, and a specific minority genuinely need the second. A room with square walls, standard ceiling heights and ordinary storage needs gets an excellent result from the semi-custom path, faster and for less. A room with a bulkhead, an out-of-square corner, a sloped ceiling or a storage requirement that no standard interior serves is where fully custom stops being a luxury and becomes the only thing that fits.
We run both, and the reason we lead with the question rather than the catalogue is that the answer changes the budget and the calendar more than any other decision in a kitchen.
What custom cabinetry actually buys you
Custom cabinetry is frequently sold on appearance, and appearance is the least interesting thing about it. What it genuinely buys is fit, and fit is what determines whether a room works.
Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes, usually in three-inch increments. A run of them installed in a wall that is not an exact multiple of three inches leaves a gap, and that gap gets closed with a filler strip. One filler is invisible. Three or four of them in a small kitchen are the reason a room looks slightly wrong without anyone being able to say why.
Built for the room means the run is made to the actual dimension. No fillers, no compromise about where a cabinet ends, and no wasted inches in a room that did not have inches to spare.
The second thing it buys is interior configuration. Standard cabinets have standard insides, and what you store is not standard. Drawer depths chosen for what actually goes in them, dividers where they are useful, and a pull-out where reaching in does not work are decisions available only when somebody is building rather than picking.
The third is that walls are rarely square and floors are rarely flat, particularly in older houses. Cabinetry made for the room is scribed to what is there. Cabinetry made in a factory assumes the room is correct, and where it is not, the difference shows at the top of a run or along a counter.
What humidity does to cabinetry here
Florida is hard on cabinetry in ways that a specification written for another climate does not account for, and this is where cheap and expensive genuinely diverge.
Cabinet boxes made from particleboard tolerate humidity poorly and tolerate water badly. A leak under a sink that would mark a plywood box will swell a particleboard one, and swollen board does not recover. Plywood construction costs more and it is the difference between a box that survives an incident and one that has to be replaced.
Solid wood doors move with humidity. That is normal, it is what wood does, and good construction accounts for it with joinery that allows movement rather than fighting it. Doors that are glued rigid across the grain crack eventually, and in this climate eventually arrives sooner.
Finishes matter for the same reason. A finish that seals the wood on all faces, including the back and the edges nobody sees, resists moisture uptake far better than one applied only where it shows. That is a shop practice rather than a product choice, and it is invisible on the day of installation.
Interiors in a laundry, a garage or anywhere near an exterior door take more humidity than a kitchen does, and specification should follow the room rather than being uniform across the house.
How a cabinet is actually built
There are two construction traditions and the choice affects both appearance and how much usable space you get.
Face-frame construction attaches a solid wood frame to the front of the box. It is the traditional American method, it is strong, and it accommodates slight irregularities well. The frame reduces the size of the opening, which costs some interior access.
Frameless construction, sometimes called full-access, omits the front frame so the box opening is the full width. More usable space and a cleaner look, with less tolerance for a wall that is out of plumb because there is no frame to absorb it.
Neither is better in general. Frameless suits contemporary work and rooms that are reasonably true. Face-frame suits traditional work and older houses where nothing is quite square.
Drawer construction is the detail worth asking about specifically. Dovetailed solid drawer boxes on full-extension undermount slides are the standard that lasts; stapled boxes on side-mount slides are the standard that does not. The difference is not visible with the drawer closed, which is precisely why it gets economised.
Hinges and slides are consumables in the sense that they carry the daily use. Soft-close is now ordinary rather than premium, and quality here is felt every day for the life of the room.
Where custom pays and where it does not
An honest assessment matters more than an upsell, so here is where the money is genuinely well spent and where it is not.
Custom pays in rooms that are not standard. An older house with a bulkhead, an out-of-square corner, a sloped ceiling or an awkward window position will fight stock cabinetry permanently, and a built solution is not a luxury there but the only thing that fits.
It pays where the storage requirement is specific. A household with a genuine need that standard interiors do not serve gets daily value from a solution built for it.
It pays in small rooms, where the inches lost to fillers and standard sizing are a meaningful fraction of the room.
It pays less in a new house with square walls, standard dimensions and ordinary storage needs. A good semi-custom line will produce an excellent result there for less money and in less time, and we will say so rather than sell against it.
The unhelpful version of this conversation is a contractor who recommends custom for every room regardless of the room. The useful version is deciding room by room.
Refacing, refinishing or replacing
Not every cabinetry project needs new cabinets, and the honest version of this conversation saves people a great deal of money.
Refinishing keeps the doors and boxes and changes the finish. It works when the construction is sound, the layout is right, and the objection is colour or a tired surface. It is the least expensive route and the one most often dismissed too quickly.
Refacing keeps the boxes and replaces the doors, drawer fronts and visible surfaces. It works when the boxes are solid and well laid out but the doors are dated or damaged, and it changes the appearance of a kitchen substantially without touching the plumbing, the counters or the layout.
Replacing is the right answer when the boxes are failing, when the layout itself is the problem, or when the room is being reconfigured anyway. Refacing a kitchen whose real fault is that the layout does not work is money spent on the wrong problem.
The test we use is simple. Open a door and look at the box, not the front. If the box is plywood, square and sound, there is a strong case for keeping it. If it is swollen particleboard, sagging shelves and failing joints, refacing is putting a new front on something that is ending.
The second test is the layout. If the room fights you daily, no amount of new doors will fix that, and the money is better spent on a plan that works.
Wood, and how it takes a finish
Species choice affects appearance, cost and how the cabinetry will look in five years, and the interaction with finish is the part people are not usually told about.
Open-grained woods such as oak show pronounced grain through almost any finish, which is part of their character and a poor choice for anyone wanting a perfectly smooth painted surface. Closed-grain woods take paint far better.
Maple is close-grained and takes paint beautifully, which is why so much painted cabinetry uses it. It can blotch under stain unless it is prepared properly, which is a shop skill rather than a product.
Paint-grade work is frequently built from a combination: a stable engineered material for flat panels that will never move, and solid wood for the frames and edges that need to hold a profile. That is good practice rather than a compromise.
The point worth taking away is that species and finish should be chosen together rather than separately. A finish decided after the wood is already selected sometimes cannot deliver what the drawing implied.
Installation, and what that week is actually like
Cabinetry installation looks like the fast part of a project and it is the part where accumulated errors surface, which is why a good installation is uneventful and a bad one is memorable.
Boxes are set to a level line rather than to the floor, because floors are not level. Where a floor falls across a run, the cabinets stay level and the gap at the bottom is dealt with by the toe kick, which is why that detail exists.
Runs are shimmed and scribed to walls that are not plumb, and this is where built cabinetry earns its money against stock: there is material to scribe into, rather than a factory edge that either meets the wall or does not.
Doors and drawers are adjusted after the boxes are secured, because a box that shifts during installation moves everything hanging on it. That adjustment is a real step rather than a finishing touch, and rushing it is why some kitchens have doors that never quite line up.
Countertop template follows installation rather than preceding it, which is the schedule gap described elsewhere on this site. The template measures what was actually installed, because that is the only measurement that guarantees a fit.
Beyond kitchens
Cabinetry work is associated with kitchens and a large share of what we build is elsewhere, frequently in rooms where the return is higher because nothing standard fits.
Laundry rooms are the clearest example. Machines come in fixed sizes, rooms do not, and a laundry designed around actual appliances with folding surface and hanging space at usable heights transforms a room that most houses treat as leftover space.
Built-ins around fireplaces, in living rooms and in awkward alcoves recover volume that would otherwise be dead. Those spaces are by definition non-standard, which is exactly when building is the right answer.
Closet interiors are the highest-value square foot of cabinetry in most houses, because the space exists already and is usually being used at a fraction of its capacity by a single rail.
Bathroom vanities benefit from custom for a specific reason: standard vanity height is noticeably low for most adults, and building allows a comfortable height without an unusual appearance.
Outdoor cabinetry is a different specification entirely, because indoor materials fail outdoors in this climate. Constant humidity, sun and salt near the coast mean marine-grade or purpose-built outdoor construction, which costs more for reasons that appear in year three rather than year one.
The design comes before the price, and it does not cost anything
Nobody should be asked to approve a kitchen from a list of line items, and nobody should have to pay to find out what a kitchen would cost.
The design service is free and it produces three things. A three-dimensional rendering of your kitchen as it would actually be built, which is the first moment most people understand what they are buying. An itemised quote, cabinet by cabinet and accessory by accessory, so the number is a list rather than a total. And a conversation with somebody who does this daily, which is where most of the useful decisions get made.
It runs in four steps and none of them commits you to anything.
You send measurements. There is a measurement guide for this, because measuring a kitchen properly is not obvious and a bad measurement produces a design that has to be redone. A designer confirms the details, the preferences and the style direction. You review the rendering and the itemised quote on any device, and change whatever you want to change. And only then, if you want it, you order.
People who prefer to sketch their own layout first can, and that works fine as a starting point. It usually gets refined once somebody who builds these for a living looks at the traffic through the room.
Styles, and how to actually choose one
The style range runs from white shaker, which is the most requested door in Florida and will still look deliberate in fifteen years, through darker woods that carry a room with less light, greys and stone tones that read modern without dating quickly, and two-tone schemes where the island is treated differently from the perimeter.
The door style catalogue is deep, and that is where people get stuck. The useful way through it is to decide two things before opening it: how much visual weight the room can carry, and whether the kitchen is the feature of the space or the background to it. A dark, heavy door in a small kitchen with one window will win an argument nobody wanted to have. The same door in a large room with light on two sides is the reason people remember the house.
Hardware and interior fittings matter more than the door does day to day. Soft-close hinges and full-extension drawer glides are the difference between cabinetry that feels considered and cabinetry that feels cheap, and they are worth specifying even when the budget is tight elsewhere.
Seeing them in person settles more in twenty minutes than photographs settle in a week. Finish reads differently under real light, and door profiles that look similar on a screen do not feel similar under a hand.
Measuring, and why it happens twice
Cabinetry is manufactured to dimensions taken from the room, which means the accuracy of those dimensions determines whether it fits.
The first measurement happens at design, to establish what is possible and to price it. The second happens after any demolition and structural work, when the room is in its final state, because the room that gets measured at design is not always the room the cabinets go into.
That second measurement is why cabinetry is ordered later in a remodel than people expect. Ordering from design-stage dimensions saves time and occasionally produces a run that is half an inch too long, which is not a problem that can be solved on site.
Walls are checked for plumb, floors for level, and corners for square, because all three affect how a run is built and installed. A floor that falls an inch across a kitchen changes how a counter meets a wall.
Appliance specifications belong in this too. Cabinetry is built to the actual model rather than to a category, and a refrigerator changed after ordering means a cabinet changed after ordering.
Lead time, which is the schedule
This section is about fully custom cabinetry, and the difference from the semi-custom path is the whole point of it. Built cabinetry is manufactured after it is ordered, and that manufacturing time is a fixed part of the calendar that cannot be shortened by working faster or paying more.
On a remodel this makes the sequence unforgiving in one direction. The room has to be measured in its final state, then the cabinetry is built, and during that period the room sits waiting. A project that treats cabinetry as a late decision discovers that the wait happens with the kitchen already demolished.
The way to manage it is to settle the design and the appliances early enough that ordering happens as soon as the final measurement is possible, rather than after a further round of deliberation.
Finish adds time as well, particularly for painted work, which involves more steps than a stained finish and has to cure properly. Rushing a finish is a decision that shows up as a surface that marks easily.
We would rather state the lead time honestly at the start and plan around it than quote a schedule that assumes it away.
What drives the cost of cabinetry
Linear footage is the first and it is close to linear in cost as well.
Box material is the second, and plywood against particleboard is the single decision with the largest effect on how long the work lasts in this climate.
Door style and finish is the third. A simple slab or shaker door in a stained finish is considerably less work than a detailed profile in a painted finish, and paint costs more than stain for the same door.
Interior fittings are the fourth: pull-outs, dividers, specialty hardware and corner solutions each add cost and each earn it only if they solve an actual problem.
And complexity is the fifth. Curved work, integrated appliance panels, glass, lighting and anything that has to be scribed to an irregular condition all add shop time, which is where the cost of cabinetry actually lives.
What a walkthrough covers before anyone talks price
Cabinetry quoted from a photograph is quoted without knowing whether the walls are square, and that is the fact that determines the approach.
Whether the room is true: walls plumb, floor level, corners square. Those three answers decide whether stock will look right or fight the room permanently.
What is actually stored and how it is used, because interior configuration is where custom earns its money and it cannot be designed from a category.
The appliances, by model rather than by type, since everything is built to their specifications.
The humidity conditions of the specific room, because a laundry, a garage and an outdoor kitchen each need a different specification from a dining room.
The output should be a written scope stating the box material, the construction method, the hardware and the finish, because those four are where cabinetry quotes differ invisibly and where a low number usually comes from.
